Abstract

Syrian (sumach) Rhus coriaria leaves proved to contain, beside the main polyphenolic gallotannin the flavonoid glycosides isoquercitrin and myricitrin, together with gallic acid, its methyl and ethyl esters, m–digallic acid and ellagic acid. These compounds were isolated from the ethyl acetate extract by means of adsorption column chromatography.

Methyl gallate was also isolated and clearly identified from an aqueous acetone extract of sumach leaves through partition solvent (ethyl acetate : water) extraction, whereby the use of methanol was avoided.
